A sports arena is considering a new stadium design, one in which each block of seats would be in an enclosed weather-proof room with a view of the playing field and a large screen TV showing the action of play, including the instant replays typical of television broadcasts of sports games. The developer reasons that exposure to elements and lack of access to instant replays significantly limits the typical spectator's enjoyment of the live game. This stadium design would be unlikely to increase the pleasure the spectators take from live games if they enjoyed(A) watching the game without interruptions from other spectators(B) coming to multiple games in a single season(C) viewing on a large screen television at home all games which they do not attend live(D) feeling the immediate camaraderie with the crowd of other spectators at the game(E) attending evening games more than midday games.
Magoosh Official Explanation:
This planned sports arena would protect people from the elements; it would prevent unwanted interruptions from other fans; and it would provide access to instant replay, something fans regularly enjoy watching the game on TV at home. These seem to be advantages, but we are asked for a reason that fans would not necessarily enjoy watching a game under these conditions. We want a weakener. (Any fan who regularly attends live sporting events may well find these plans questionable!)
The credited answer is (D): if sport fans enjoy the "rush" of being part of a crowd in a moment of excitement, that's precisely what would be lost if everyone were boxed away in their little containers. That feeling of camaraderie is a major draw for fans, and this is precisely what this new design does not take into account.
We want a weakener, and (A) is a strengthener: if folks didn't want interruptions from other spectators, being sealed off in a private container might sound good.
(B) is irrelevant: if a spectator comes to several live games in a single season, that would intensify any reaction --- whether that spectator likes or doesn't like something about the arena, they are going to see it multiple times. If they loved the new stadium, then this would be great. In and of itself, this simply doesn't provide a specific reason why they wouldn't enjoy it.
(C) is also a vague strengthener: if folks like watching the games on a large screen TV at home, then when they have that TV in their enclosed room at the stadium, they will feel right at home. This seems to strengthen the argument for the plan, and we need a weakener.
(E) is an even vaguer strengthener. We don't know where this stadium is geographically, but if it's cold or inclement in the evenings, then a weather-proof room would be appealing. Again, this seems to strengthen the argument for the plan, and we need a weakener.
