Hello,

I have the following query:
The argument says: "...company will significantly reduce..."
Prethinking:
By word 'significantly', i think that only replacing the lid may not result in significant reduction of plastic waste, since lid constitutes small portion of the whole cup. If whole cup is made of plastic then the cup also needs to change. By this if some choice gives an indication that the cup is actually not made of plastic or the cup is not thrown away, then it is a good supporter.

It was down to C and E:

In choice C it striked me that the argument says "by using the new lid" and C actually says the cup also plays a part in plastic reduction.
But it also tells that cup will be saved. Held C.

In Choice E: again straws are not large portion of the whole coffee cup, lid and straw combination. Moreover not everyone will use straws.

Other considerations those came to mind:
Straws have not been talked about in the argument and also cups are not talked about in the argument. But straws may not be used, but cup are definitely needed for the coffee.

According to all above I striked of E and selected C.

Could you explain where I went wrong?

Thanks,
Ankit

The key detail we need to notice is that the conclusion is the following:

by using the new lid, the company will significantly reduce the amount of plastic waste it generates

So, the argument is focused on the effect of using the new lid.

Thus, the information provided by (C) about the effect of changing the cup has no effect on the support for the conclusion.

Straws are not mentioned in the passage, but (E) confirms something that the argument has not covered, that there will not be an offsetting effect of increased straw use. Thus, (E) strengthens the support for the conclusion.
