B is the answer.

The passage explains that snow melted quickly from the driveway due to automatic driveway heater. However statement B explains that there is no difference in melting rate of snow Homeowner S even though he hasn't installed driveway heater and therefore it jeopardizes the conclusion.

The morning after a snowstorm had left a uniform amount of snow on each driveway on the block, Homeowner R turned on his automatic driveway heater to help melt the snow away. The snow on this homeowner's driveway melted quickly because the automatic driveway heater is designed to pump warm water into pipes that are situated just below the surface of the driveway.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously jeopardizes the validity of the explanation for the speed with which the snow melted on the driveway belonging to Homeowner R?

A) The same snowstorm mentioned above left much less snow on the driveways of homeowners in a neighboring town, and the snow there melted quickly without the use of automatic driveway heaters.

B) Even though Homeowner S, who lives on the same block as Homeowner R, made no effort to melt the snow on his driveway, the snow on Homeowner S's driveway melted just as fast as the snow melted on the driveway with the automatic heater.

C) Homeowner T, who lives on the same block as Homeowner R, shovels the snow off of his driveway rather than investing in an automatic driveway heater.

D) Automatic driveway heaters are expensive to install since they require that the existing driveway be completely removed in order to install the necessary pipes.

E) The automatic driveway heater used by Homeowner R operates with its own water heater so that it can work efficiently even when people in the house are using warm water to take showers, to do the laundry, or for other uses.

Official Explanation

Identify the Question Type: This question asks for something that makes the conclusion of the argument less likely to be true, so it's a Weaken question.

Untangle the Stimulus: The stimulus says that the automatic driveway heater caused the quick melting of the snow on the driveway.

Predict the Answer: Since this is a causal argument, the task is to find the answer choice that suggests that some other factor caused the quick melting.

Evaluate the Choices:

While (B) does not say what the other factor is, it does suggest that something other than the automatic water heater caused the quick melting. If the neighbor's driveway cleared just as quickly without the heater, then some outside factor (perhaps a hot sun) likely caused both to melt quickly. (B) is the correct answer.

(A), (C), and (D) are all irrelevant to the argument. It does not weaken the conclusion to learn that the snow melted quickly in another town, as (A) states, because we there was a different amount of snow on the ground in that town. Similarly, knowing that Homeowner T shovels or that the heaters are expensive to install does not undermine the explanation given.

If anything, (E) strengthens the argument by removing a possible undermining factor. If the heater was not working well because of hot water use in the house, then the conclusion would be undermined. However, (E) removes this possibility and is thus incorrect.

TAKEAWAY: To weaken a causal argument, show evidence of another cause.
