OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Exercise is an integral part of sustaining a high level of health. The body needs to be challenged if it is to become fitter and stronger. However, overexertion can lead to injury. An exercise program should always maintain a slow and natural pace of progression.

In the argument given, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

A. The first is an opinion; the second is a conclusion based on that opinion.

Incorrect.

This is a Boldface Type question, in which you are required to define the role of the two boldface sections in the argument. Read the argument and break it down using indicative words:

  • Sentence 1 is a premise because it cites a fact.
  • Sentence 2 is a premise because it presents an additional fact.
  • The first boldface portion in sentence 3 is a fact (premise) presented as an event that may occur. Note the phrase can lead to.
  • The second boldface portion, or the last sentence, is a judgment (conclusion) supported by sentences 2 and 3.

An opinion is the personal belief of the author. The first boldface, however, presents factual information. You can immediately eliminate answer choices that incorrectly define the first boldface part; do not waste time reading the rest.

B. The first is a factual possibility; the second is an opinion that opposes that possibility.

Incorrect.

While this answer choice defines the first boldface part correctly, it defines the second incorrectly. Because the second boldface portion is supported by the first, it is incorrect to say that it opposes it.

C. The first is a general opinion; the second is a conclusion that supports that opinion.

Incorrect.

An opinion is something that is believed by the author or other people. It can be true or false. The first boldface, however, presents factual information. You can immediately eliminate answer choices that incorrectly define the first boldface part; do not waste time reading the rest.

D. The first is a factual possibility; the second is a conclusion that presents a method of preventing the occurrence of that possibility.

The first boldface portion presents us with a possible situation that is based purely on fact. The second boldface portion concludes the argument by presenting a judgment about what must be done to prevent the situation (injury) from occurring.

E. The first is a possible event of cause and effect; the second denies the possibility of such an event to occur.

While this answer choice defines the first boldface part correctly, it defines the second incorrectly. Because the second boldface is supported by the first, it is incorrect to say that it denies its possibility to occur. If the event would never occur, then sentence 3 wouldn't be a fact.

Hi ! How is the first sentence a fact? There is no proof given to us in the argument that it is a fact.

The argument says exercise is necessary, but it also warns that too much exertion can cause injury. From that risk, it draws a recommendation about how an exercise program should be structured. So the first boldface part is a possible harmful outcome, and the second is the conclusion that aims to prevent it.

(A) The first is an opinion; the second is a conclusion based on that opinion.

This is not right. The first statement is not presented as a mere opinion. It is presented as a possible real consequence of overexertion.

(B) The first is a factual possibility; the second is an opinion that opposes that possibility.

This is not right. The second statement does not oppose the possibility of injury. It gives a recommendation meant to reduce that risk.

(C) The first is a general opinion; the second is a conclusion that supports that opinion.

This is incorrect. Again, the first part is not framed as a general opinion, and the second does not support it. It responds to it.

(D) The first is a factual possibility; the second is a conclusion that presents a method of preventing the occurrence of that possibility.

This is the best answer. The first boldface part states the danger, and the second gives the recommended way to avoid that danger.

(E) The first is a possible event of cause and effect; the second denies the possibility of such an event to occur.

This is incorrect. The second statement does not deny that injury can happen. It says how one should exercise so that the risk is lower.
