I have a doubt regarding Option C. How can we assume that the disruption in digestion caused by the herbs has a positive connotation? Why can't we consider that it might be a negative disruption, suggesting that we should avoid taking such natural substances?
poojaarora1818
Solution:

(A) The increase in the popularity of herbal teas is a result of the emergence of the organic product market. Incorrect. It doesn't strengthen the argument; rather, it has no impact.

(B) Average-size supermarkets usually offer products with the highest level of consumer awareness. Incorrect. It is not a strengthener. It talks about the average size of the market and its sales of products with the highest level of consumer awareness.

(C) Herbs grown in a garden, with water alone, contain none of the food-industry chemicals that have been proven to disrupt digestion. Correct. Yes, it strengthens the argument as it talks about the benefits of growing herbs without chemicals.

(D) Some people add large amounts of sugar to herbal tea, increasing the amount of calories in the beverage. Incorrect. It only talks about the calorie intake due to the addition of sugar.

(E) Buying tea herbs directly from farms does not rule out the possibility that they contain residue from pesticides or hormones. Incorrect. It rather weakens the argument.

Herbal tea has become a popular product and is offered by a number of brands. An investigation showed that out of the 7 brands of tea sold at an average-sized supermarket, all included preservatives and added chemicals for flavor and color. It can be stated, therefore, that in order to drink a truly healthy herbal tea, the ingredients should be collected from a natural source.

Which of the following, if true, supports the argument's conclusion?

(A) The increase in the popularity of herbal teas is a result of the emergence of the organic product market.

(B) Average-size supermarkets usually offer products with the highest level of consumer awareness.

(C) Herbs grown in a garden, with water alone, contain none of the food-industry chemicals that have been proven to disrupt digestion.

An assumption is always a missing link between a premise and the main conclusion. And a strengthener always provides additional support to the conclusion. See, the conclusion mentioned in the passage states that to drink a truly healthy herbal tea, the ingredients should be collected from a natural source. And option C clearly states that a herb grown with water alone, without any chemicals, gives us reason to believe that there is no negative disruption. We are safe as long as we are close to nature. Think! So, the best option is option C.

Hope that helps!

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Herbal tea has become a popular product and is offered by a number of brands. An investigation showed that out of the 7 brands of tea sold at an average-sized supermarket, all included preservatives and added chemicals for flavor and color. It can be stated, therefore, that in order to drink a truly healthy herbal tea, the ingredients should be collected from a natural source.

Which of the following, if true, supports the argument's conclusion?

(A) The increase in the popularity of herbal teas is a result of the emergence of the organic product market.

Incorrect.

To solve this Conclusion Strengthening question, first break down the argument. The first two sentences are premises which provide factual data; the last sentence contains the conclusion conjunction therefore so it's the conclusion.

Premise A: a number of brands make herbal tea
+
Premise B: in an average supermarket, 7 of 7 herbal tea brands contain chemical additives
+
Conclusion: if you want to drink healthy herbal tea, use naturally-grown herbs

Possible assumption: all branded herbal teas are unhealthy

Strengthening Data: ?

You are required to find data that supports the conclusion that healthy tea is not made by brands. The correct answer could be one that confirms the argument's assumption.

This answer choice neither weakens nor strengthens the conclusion. Why herbal teas became popular is not relevant to our task since it does not support the author's conclusion.

(B) Average-size supermarkets usually offer products with the highest level of consumer awareness.

Incorrect.

This answer choice weakens the conclusion, by showing that seeking truly healthy herbal tea outside of average-size supermarkets is pointless; these supermarkets already offer the best products consumers are looking for.

(C) Herbs grown in a garden, with water alone, contain none of the food-industry chemicals that have been proven to disrupt digestion.

This answer choice strengthens the author's conclusion by making two points:

1. It mentions that the chemicals in the branded tea disrupt digestion.

2. It claims that herbs grown with water alone do not contain such chemicals.

(D) Some people add large amounts of sugar to herbal tea, increasing the amount of calories in the beverage.

Incorrect.

This answer choice neither weakens nor strengthens the conclusion. What Some people may do is not relevant to our task since it does not support the author's conclusion.

(E) Buying tea herbs directly from farms does not rule out the possibility that they contain residue from pesticides or hormones.

Incorrect.

This answer choice could be considered to be weakening the conclusion by showing that even some of the natural sources for herbal tea leaves (farms) are not necessarily chemical-free.
