The passage is about a Sub urban Town - Bonne Boroughs, which has a standard dumpsters near forested lands. This dumpsters attract racoons, which forage during night for food. As a chain reaction, the predators of raccoons are attracted to hunt raccoons, increasing the likelihood of foxes and bobcats in that area.

The Bonne borough has intended to rectify this situation by replacing current ones (open landfill spaces) with lockable ones, which makes the raccoons to search other places for food. So, the outcome is decline of predator populations in these regions, since ____________.

We need to complete the passage.

A. without a local concentration of the racoons on which foxes and bobcats prey, these predators expend much more energy on hunting, requiring much more prey for each fox and bobcat.

The passage has mentioned, raccoons are the primary source of food for foxes and bobcats, and not the only source. So, if a source gets depleted, it’s obvious to survive, the predators must exert some energy to survive. The quantum of consumption, because of paucity of primary source is irrelevant. Hence, Wrong.

B. foxes and bobcats are not likely to prey on other animals that might be attracted to the dumpsters.

This is the correct answer, because if predators prey on other animals that are attracted to the dumpsters. The decline might not happen, even if we remove the raccoons out of the equation. The predators have an alternate source of food, so gets attracted to the Bonne borough.

C. the sanitation department is capable of replacing the current dumpsters with lockable ones within a relatively short time and without disrupting regular sanitation services.

If the sanitation department is replacing the current system with lockable ones, within a short duration. Then, the impact caused by sanitation is taken out of the equation. So, they come to a conclusion that cutting the source, cuts the link. This mentions, the sanitation department is CAPABLE of doing, what if the plan was not successful. Futuristic implementation ideas are not ways to arrive a concrete answer. Hence, wrong.

D. foxes and bobcats do not start hunting before sundown.

This is an irrelevant option. Thus, Wrong.

E. foxes and bobcats primarily rely on smell to track prey and therefore gain no advantage from the fact that there is more light in the neighborhoods than in the forested land.

This is also a filler option, completely out of scope. The techniques used to prey is nowhere a context of discussion. Hence, Wrong.

option B
Wonderful question. Thanks ExpertsGlobal5.

The key pointer is LOCKABLE DUMPSTER, WHICH WILL NOT RACOON. This new feature not only prevents the racoons, but also other animals as it has been locked.

With No animals attracted to locked ones. Whether foxes and bobcats feeds on other prey’s seems immaterial. So, B is wrong.

Option A mentions, the lockable dumpsters, shift the source of foods for all animals, and thus they roam to look for food. The expend of energy denotes the sources has now shifted, and this indirectly reflects the decline in foxes and bobcats, which run after them.

Which of the following most logically completes the argument below?

Standard dumpsters found in suburban neighborhoods next to forested land attract racoons, as the racoons forage for discarded food in the dumpsters at night. The racoons, in turn, attract foxes and bobcats, their natural predators who feed primarily on the racoons, into the neighborhoods. The town of Bonne’ Borough intends to rectify this situation by replacing their current dumpsters with lockable ones that will not attract racoons. This change is likely to result in a drop in the population of foxes and bobcats in Bonne’ Borough, since __________.

A. without a local concentration of the racoons on which foxes and bobcats prey, these predators expend much more energy on hunting, requiring much more prey for each fox and bobcat
B. foxes and bobcats are not likely to prey on other animals that might be attracted to the dumpsters
C. the sanitation department is capable of replacing the current dumpsters with lockable ones within a relatively short time and without disrupting regular sanitation services.
D. foxes and bobcats do not start hunting before sundown
E. foxes and bobcats primarily rely on smell to track prey and therefore gain no advantage from the fact that there is more light in the neighborhoods than in the forested land
