The passage begins by citing Bob Dylan, who was awarded the Nobel prize for Literature for collective body of Songwriting, in 2016. The issue the passage brings up to the forefront is Song writing is related more towards the musical side, while the award is on Literature. How, are these two different aspects linked through Bob Dylan.
The author mentions, that song must be played in a musician metre, song writers must utilise their craft with an eye towards the end results - ultimately the lyrics in complete harmony with the music, culminating as a perfect wedding. He concludes, due to these reasons, song writing is not to be considered as a literature.
Assumption is something that’s not mentioned in the passage, and that fills the logical gap between the argument and conclusion. And the option should pass the negation test.
A. Writing is not literature if its writer pays attention to the musicality of one’s work.
This Option is the assumption, if the writer pays attention to the musicality of one’s work, then the song lyrics cannot be considered as a literature, but rather it’s considered as a musical art.
If we negate it, Writing is considered as a literature, with or without writers attention to the musicality of work. The conclusion falls apart.
B. Some songwriters are more concerned than others with the musicality of the work they produce.
Each individual views a work from his own perspective and belief systems, this is a factual statement and not an assumption.
C. Songwriters should be more concerned with the musicality of their work than they currently are.
There is no where mentioned that song writers of today are less concerned towards the musicality of their work. This comparison is baseless, and illogical. Hence, Wrong.
D. Some songs are written as an artistic experiment and are not meant to be sung.
If that’s the case, then such songs are called as poetry, and only when we infuse the musical aspect to the song, it gains life as a song. So, songs which are meant to be wedded with music, should be written with that aspect in mind. This speaks in generalised manner, hence wrong.
E. Writers who produce literature are not concerned with their work’s monetary value.
This statement speaks about a person who is like once in a blue moon, all writers create their work , with a slight focus on monetary value, even though, personal satisfaction, pleasing and soothing experience to the masses might be a reason. Hence, Wrong.
