Mr.Sam takes 18 hours to go by train to a certain city and return by car. He loses 4 hours if he goes both ways by train. How lng would he have taken if he had traveled by car in both ways?

Let the distance one side be D
speed of train = x
speed of car = y
from 1st stmnt,
18 = (D/x) + (D/y)....time = distance/ speed
from 2nd stmnt,
22 = (D/x) + (D/x) = (2D/x)
solving, both the equations, we get D/y =7
now this is one side...total time = to and fro = 7+7 = 14hrs..

The answer is (E).
Lets do it without the equations.
Going one way by train and one way by car, he takes 18 hours.
Going both ways by train, he takes 4 hours more => The train takes 4 hours more one way
Therefore travelling both ways by car, he takes 4 hours less than 18
=> He takes 18-4 = 14 hours.
