Shaggy has to learn the same 71 hiragana characters, and also has one week to do so; he can learn as many per day as he wants.however shaggy has decided to obey the advice of a study-skills professional, who has advised him that the number of characters he learns on any one day should be within 4 of the number he learns on any other day.
a) What is the least number of hiragana that shaggy could have to learn on Saturday?
b) what is the greatest number of hiragana that shaggy could have to learn on Saturday?
Why are we assuming that, in part b, that Shaggy can't learn them all in two days?
It does not specify that he has to learn something every day. It says that he can learn as many as he wants in any day and it has to be within four of the the last time he learned.
So for b, I would say that he learns 34 in Friday, for example, and he will have to learn 37 on Saturday. Both would total to 71 characters.
These types of problems confuse me. I would go assuming all kinds of things but it turns out to be easier than expected. The wording is not clear.

I agree that the wording is pretty bad. What is the meaning of "the same" in the first sentence? The same as what?
In any case, 'Shaggy' can't learn all of the characters in two days, by, say, learning 34 on Saturday, 37 on Sunday, and 0 on every other day in the week, because then the number he learned on Saturday (34) will not be within 4 of the number he learned on Monday (0).

So we are assuming that he has to learn something everyday. By them saying, on any one day, we will have to assume that he is supposed to study week round, right?
