So we are assuming that he has to learn something everyday. By them saying, on any one day, we will have to assume that he is supposed to study week round, right?

Well, that's what I'd guess we're supposed to assume - I didn't write the question! :)

Real GMAT questions are always very precisely worded, so you shouldn't ever find an official question which is open to different interpretations. Prep company questions are a different story, however.

1) we want Saturday to be lowest. So all others max.
Let x be the Saturday count.
x+6(x+4)=7x+24=71
7x=47
X is not quite an integer now. Since, we already maxed out we have to reduce some of the x+4 days.
7x+24 - something = 71
7x = 47+ something
Next multiple of 7 is 49
X=49/7=7

2)
Similarly
x+6(x-4)=7x-24=71
7x=95
Since we already minimized the other days we have to compromise and increase the count on other days a little.
So we need to take lower multiple of 7.
7x=91
X=13

PS: answer not provided. So not 100% sure.
