Keri - 63
Luke - 15
Mia - 38
Nora - 22
If an integer number of Keri's points were taken from her and given to Luke, and the median score of the 5 players increased - how many points were transferred from Keri to Luke?

from the data above i get '38' as median. according to answer of manhattan (b-24), the new integers for keri and luke will be - 39, 24.
but with these isn,t the median remain same - 38? it is not increased? where am i going wrong?help..

Arranging the scores in increasing orders:
15, 22, 38, 51, 63
Median is 38.
Points are taken from Keri (63) and given to Luke (15), such that median is increased.
So, new arrangement would be:
_, _, 39, _, _
which means points are added to 15 to make it 39.
15+x = 39
x = 24
thus, 63 - x = 39
so, 22, 38, 39, 39, 51, here  new number for both keri & luke is 39.

Now there are other possibilities,
_, _, 40, _, _
15+x = 40
x = 25
thus, 63 - x = 38,
so, 22, 38, 38, 40, 51...here the median doesn't change.

So, Answer is (B),

This question can be solved by TESTing THE ANSWERS.

We're given 5 'scores': 15, 22, 38, 51 and 63. We're asked to take points from Keri (63) and give them to Luke (15), so that the MEDIAN INCREASES. We're asked for the integer number of points that would make that happen...

Since the highest and lowest scores are the only ones that are changing, it's likely that one of them will become the new median, so we should look for an answer that would make that happen.

We could raise the 15 to a 39 if we added 24 points to it, so let's TEST Answer B: 24 points...
