A school's annual budget for the purchase of student computers increased by 60% this year over last year. if the price of student computers increased by 20% this year, then the number of computers it can purchase this year is what percent greater than the number of computers it purchased last year?

a. 33.33%
b. 40%
c. 42%
d. 48%
e. 60%

Since the price is increased by 20%, for 120% of last year budget they get as many computers as they got last year, say n
For 160% they will get 160/120 = 4/3n
Hence 1/3n i.e. 33.33% more than last year

A school’s annual budget for the purchase of student computers increased by 60% this year over last year. If the price of student computers increased by 20% this year, then the number of computers it can purchase this year is what percent greater than the number of computers it purchased last year?

A. 33.33%
B. 40%
C. 42%
D. 48%
E. 60%

Pick numbers.

Lats year: budget = $100, price = $1 --> the number of computers purchased = 100/1 = 100;

This year: budget = $160, price = $1.2 --> the number of computers purchased = 160/1.2 = ~133.33.

Increase in the number of computers purchased = 33.33%.

Answer: A.

Hope it's clear.
This truly is wonderfully explained.

Last year Budget = $100
01 Computer price = $100
so number computer bought in last year = 01

This year Budget = $160
01 Computer price = $120

Number of computer can be bought in this year = Total Budget / Computer price = 160/ 120 = 1.33
% of number of computer is increased = (1.33 - 1)/ 100 = 33%

Let's say your budget was 100 and computer was 100 too. So you could buy 1 computer.

Now you have 160 but the price is 120. So you can buy 1computer and 40/120 which is 33.33% more.

So technically you can buy 1.33 computers.
Option A.

Note: You can just ignore the fraction. You should realise for a higher appropriate value you will find an Integer value

Let original budget = x
Original budget increases by 60%: New budget = 1.6x
Computer price increases by 20%: New price = 1.2p (where p is original price)
Number of computers last year = x ÷ p
Number of computers this year = 1.6x ÷ (1.2p)
Find increase ratio:
(1.6x ÷ 1.2p) ÷ (x ÷ p) = 4/3= 1.333...
Calculate percentage increase:
Ratio - 1 = 1.333... - 1 = 0.333...= 33.33%
Answer: 33.33%

Budget (Expenditure) = Cost * Consumption (Number)
last year--> B=C * No.
This year--> 1.6B=1.2C * No2
No2= 1.6B/1.2C=4/3 No.

Say No. =3, for every 3 computers now 4 can be bought.
change of one over a base of 3. So 1/3=0.33 or 33%
