1/x+1/x +6=1/4

x^2-2x-24=0

(x+4)*(x-6)=0

x=6, because not negative

Hi All,

This question is worded in an odd way, but the basic idea behind it is based on the Work Formula. Any time you have a prompt that deals with 2 entities (people, machines, groups, etc.) that work together to complete a task, you can use the Work Formula to answer the question.

Work = (A)(B)/(A+B) where A and B are the individual times of each entity.

Here, we're told that (working together) the two teams would complete a job in 4 days. This means that (individually) each team would take MORE than 4 days to do the job. The question asks for what the two individual times COULD be. Since the answer choices ARE numbers, one of them MUST be the answer, so we can TEST THE ANSWERS.

Answers A, B and C are illogical, since the individual times must both be greater than 4 days.

Using the values for Answers D and E, we have...

Answer D: (5)(11)/(5+11) = 55/16 = 3 7/16 This is NOT a match
Answer E: (6)(12)/(6+12) = 72/18 = 4 This IS a match

Final Answer:
GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

Two teams, working jointly, complete harvesting a plot in 4 days. In how many days would each team complete the job, working separately, if one of the teams might do the worksix daysearlier than the other team?

A. 2 and 8
B. 3 and 9
C. 4 and 10
D. 5 and 11
E. 6 and 12

Four Days and Six days earlier must ring the bells that the Number might be divisible by both 4 & 6

Try option (E) first coz it has both 6 and 12.

Let the total work be 12

A+B completes the work in 4 days so, his efficiency is 3 units/day

Let A = 6 days and B = 12 days...

So, Efficiency of A = 12/6 =2
And efficiency of B = 12/12 = 1

Check combined efficiency ( 1 + 2 ) = 3

So, This works..

Hence answer will be (E)...
