For Company X : Charge = 1.95 + (0.10 *t)
For Company Y : Charge = 5.95 + (0.08*t)
where t is the time in minutes
Both the values will be equal
=> 1.95 + (0.10 *t) = 5.95 + (0.08*t)
=> 0.02 t = 4
=> t = 200

Telephone Company X's monthly charge for long-distance telephone calls is $1.95 plus $0.10 per minute, whereas Telephone Company Y's monthly charge is $5.95 plus $0.08 per minute. For what total number of minutes of long-distance calls per month would the monthly charge for the two companies be the same?

A. 100
B. 120
C. 150
D. 180
E. 200

We can let m = the total number of minutes for long-distance calls for the month and create the equation:

1.95 + 0.1m = 5.95 + 0.08m

0.02m = 4

m = 200

Answer: E
