A certain store sold pens for $0.35 each and pencils for $0.25 each. If a customer purchased both pens and pencils from the store for a total of $2.50, what total number of pens and pencils did the customer purchase?

(A) 8
(B) 9
(C) 10
(D) 11
(E) 12

If you don't want to pick up numbers here is one more solution.
Let x is a number of penc and y is a number of pencils, Then we have that 0.35x+0.25y=2.5 Multiply by 100 both parts to get 35x+25y=250 ==>7x+5y=50. Now let's factor out 5 ==>5((7/5)x+y)=50. Divide by 5 to get (7/5)x+y=10. Now since both x and y are integers it is clear that x is a multiple of 5. So we can pick numbers. Lets start with x=5 ==> y=3 and x+y=8. Looks good but let's try x=10. Now we have y=-4 which is impossible. Hence x=5,y=3 and answer is A. Hope it is clear

(A) 8
(B) 9
(C) 10
(D) 11
(E) 12

We can let the number of pens = a and the number of pencils = b; thus:

0.35a + 0.25b = 2.50

35a + 25b = 250

7a + 5b = 50

7a = 50 - 5b

7a = 5(10 - b)

a = 5(10 - b)/7

Since a and b are integers, we see that b must be 3. Thus, a = 5(7)/7 = 5.

Thus, the total number of pens and pencils is 3 + 5 = 8.

Answer: A
