Another way:

Given x/y = 2/3

Add 1 to both sides and we get  (x+y)/y= 5/3 or (x+y)= 5y/3 
Subract 1 from both sides and we get 
(x-y)/y= -1/3 or (x-y) =-y./3

So we have  (x+y)/(x-y)= (5y/3)/(-y/3) or -5

\frac{x+y}{y} = \frac{2+3}{3} = \frac{5}{3}  ................. (1)

\frac{x+y}{x-y} = -5
