The regular price per can of a certain brand of soda is $0.40. If the regular price per can is discounted 15 percent when the soda is purchased in 24-can cases, what is the price of 72 cans of this brand of soda purchased in 24-can cases?

A. $16.32
B. $18.00
C. $21.60
D. $24.48
E. $28.80

The price per can when purchased in a 24-can case is 0.4 x 0.85 = $0.34 per can.

Thus, 72 cans would cost 0.34 x 72 = $24.48.

Answer: D

Hi Sa800,

Yes, you absolutely can, and it's worth seeing why it's not a shortcut cheat but the exact same math.

You're looking at PareshGmat's line: instead of discounting each can first, he took the full undiscounted total (0.40 × 72 = 28.80) and then knocked off 15% from the whole thing (28.80 × 0.85 = 24.48).

Why both paths land on the same number: multiplication doesn't care about the order you group things in. Bunuel's per-can path is:

- (0.40 × 0.85) × 72 - discount each can, then multiply by 72

Paresh's whole-total path is:

- (0.40 × 72) × 0.85 - find the total, then discount it

Both are just 0.40 × 0.85 × 72 with the three numbers multiplied in a different order. Same three factors, same product - $24.48 either way.

The intuition: applying "85% of" to every can and then adding them up gives you 85% of the whole pile. Taking 15% off each item or 15% off the combined bill is the same discount - nothing changes about the fraction being kept.

Quick check to lock it in: buy just 2 cans.

- Per can: 0.40 × 0.85 = 0.34, then 0.34 × 2 = 0.68
- Whole total: 0.40 × 2 = 0.80, then 0.80 × 0.85 = 0.68

Same answer. So whenever a single percentage applies uniformly to every unit, discount per-unit or discount the total - pick whichever keeps the arithmetic clean.

Answer: D
