A football player scores 2 goals in his fifth match thus increasing his average goals score by 0.2. The total number of goals in his 5 matches would be

A: 4

B: 6

C: 8

D: 10

E: 12

Source: CMAT Preparation

In the fifth match, had he scored the same number of goals as his average, his average would have remained same. But to increase the average by 0.2, the last match must account for 0.2*5 = 1 goal extra. Since he scored 2 goals in fifth match, his previous average must have been 1 i.e. he must have scored 4 goals in 4 matches.
His total number of goals scored = 4 + 2 = 6

Let x be the number of goals player scored in 4 games. Then his average in 4 games is (x/4). If his average increased by 0.2 after 5 games then we can write ((x+2)/5)=(x/4)+0.2 ==> x=4 and hence after 5 games he scored 6 goals

Hi All,

While this question can be solved with a rather straight-forward algebra approach (as the other posters have noted), it can also be solved by TESTing THE ANSWERS. One of those numbers MUST be the total number of goals...

From a tactical standpoint, it's best to TEST either Answer B or Answer D, so if the answer is not correct, then you would have a gauge for whether you should go "higher" or "lower" with your next TEST.

Here, I'll start with Answer B = 6 goals

If....
Total goals = 6 goals
5th game = 2 goals
1st 4 games = 4 goals
Avg. for 1st 4 games = 4/4 = 1 goal/game
Avg. for all 5 games = 6/5 = 1.2 goals/game

This is an EXACT MATCH for what we're told in the prompt, so Answer B MUST be the answer.

Final Answer:
GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Total= average * number of matches

Let his average was a

for 5 matches average = a+.2

total= 5(a+.2)= 5a+1

That means 1 more than multiple of 5. Only B satisfies this condition
