Tough and Tricky questions: Statistics.

Given the ascending set {x, x, y, y, y, y}. What is greater, the median or the mean?

A. The mean
B. The median
C. They are equal

let x=0 and y=1

thus set = {0,0,1,1,1} mean = 3/5 and median = 1

hence B

Agreed, its clearly B - The Median.

This set has 6 numbers

{0,0,1,1,1,1}

Median = 1

Mean = \(\frac{2}{3}\)

Answer = B

Ascending set: x, x, y, y, y, y

Median = y+y/2 = 2y/2 = y
Mean = x+x+y+y+y+y/6 = 2x+4y/6 = x+2y/3

Now, we know that x<y

So, x+2y/3 will be less than y+2y/3, which is 3y/3 = y (Replacing x with y).

Hence, median will be greater than mean. Option B.

Please correct me, if you spot any mistakes.

Thanks,
