Answer = C = 18

Lets say

p+q = 3 ........... (1)

r+p = 4 ............. (2)

q+r = 10 ........... (3)

Adding (1) (2) & (3)

2(p+q+r) = 17

\(p+q+r = \frac{17}{2}\)

However, given that p+q+r = 34

\(\frac{17}{2} * (How many times) = 34\)

Multiplication factor \(= 34 * \frac{2}{17} = 4\)

Start multiplying RHS of (1) (2) & (3) by 4

p + q = 12 ............ (4)

r + p = 16 ............. (5)

q + r = 40 .............. (6)

(4) - (5)

q - r = -4 ................ (7)

Adding (6) & (7)

2q = 36

q = 18

+1. Makes sense. Thanks. I took long to find the answer.

The ratio (p + q):(r + p):(q + r) = 3:4:10. (p + q + r) = 34. What is the value of q'

A) -6
B) 12
C) 18
D) 22
E) 40

slightly different approach.
as p+q+r=34, thus p+q=34-r, r+p=34-q and q+r=34-p

thus, we have 34-r:34-q:34-p = 3x:4x:10x
or
34-r+34-q+34-p=3x+4x+17x
or 17x= 2.34
or x=4
now 34-q=4(4)
or q=34-16=18

(17/2)*x=p+q+r
p+q+r=34
Hence x=4
p+q+r=34
q=34-(p+r)
p+r=4x
q=34-4*4=18
Answer is C

Given: The ratio (p + q):(r + p):(q + r) = 3:4:10. (p + q + r) = 34.
Asked: What is the value of q'

p + q = 3k
r + p = 4k
q + r = 10k

Adding all above
2(p+q+r) = 2*34 = 17k
k = 4

r + p= 16
q = (p + q + r) - (r + p) = 34 - 16 = 18
