Since we want the ratio of LCD/Total Tv to be highest we need balance maximizing the LCD TV sales and keeping the total TV sales low.

If you observe the graph keenly you will realize that Wednesday is the only day when LCD Sales are equal to 50% of total sales. All rest days the % is much lower. Hence the ratio will be highest for Wednesday. Answer is C.

Tough and Tricky questions: Word Problems.

A computer retailer sells only TFT and LCD monitors. In the graph above, the x-axis represents the day of the week and the y-axis represents the number of monitors sold. On which day was the ratio of the number of LCD monitors sold to the total number of monitors sold the greatest?

A. Monday
B. Tuesday
C. Wednesday
D. Thursday
E. Friday

Kudos for a correct solution.

OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

The number of LCD sales is the difference between total sales and TFT sales.

For each day of the week, we can determine the ratio of the number of LCD monitors sold to the total number of monitors sold:
Monday: (18 – 10)/18 = 4/9
Tuesday: (22 – 12)/22 = 5/11
Wednesday: (24 – 12)/24 = 1/2
Thursday: (26 – 16)/26 = 5/13
Friday: (26 – 14)/26 = 6/13.

The greatest fraction is 1/2, so the ratio on Wednesday is the largest.

The correct answer is choice (C).

For this question no calculation but just a conceptual understanding of fractions is necessary:

The question asks us to find the maximum ratio of \(\frac{LCD}{(LCD+TFT)}\).
How do we maximise this fraction? By minimising the denominator, i.e. LCD+TFT, and maximising the numerator, i.e. LCD.
Hence, what we should be looking for in the graph, is a large difference between total sales and TFT (=LCD sales) and a low value for TFT sales. Wednesday fulfills our condition and is the answer.

Please hit Kudos if you liked this approach :)
