Tough and Tricky questions: Geomtry.




In the figure above every square is contained within a square that has twice its area. What is the area of the largest square, if the smallest square has an area of 4?

A. 2
B. 4
C. 8
D. 10
E. 16

Kudos for a correct solution.

OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

(E) If the area of the smallest square is equal to 4, then the area of the middle square must be twice as large, or equal to 8 square units. Finally, the largest square must have an area of twice the area of the middle square. So the area of the largest square equals 16 units, or the answer choice (E).

Square 1 = 4
Square 2 = 4 * 2 = 8
Square 3 = 8 *2 = 16
