When Jessica withdrew $200 from her bank account, her account balance decreased by 2/5. If she deposits an amount equal to 1/4 of the remaining balance, what will be the final balance in her bank account?

A) 300
B) 375
C) 400
D) 500
E) 575

I have been attempting to apply backsolving to this problem. Any advice on setting it up as such, or overall is backsolving not the way to go with this problem?

2/5 th = 200

So, Total amount is 500 ; Amount left is 300

14/th of remaining balance is 300/4 = 75 ; So Final Balance is (B) 375, Answer must be (B)

A) 300
B) 375
C) 400

We can let T = Jessica’s beginning balance. We can create the equation:

T - 200 = 3T/5

5T - 1000 = 3T

2T = 1000

T = 500

Therefore, her remaining balance after the withdrawal is 500 - 200 = $300. Since she deposits ¼ x 300 = $75 back into the account, her final balance is 300 + 75 = $375.

Answer: B
