we then have B + 2B + B-20 =180
4B=200
B=50

B = J + 20
J = B -20

B = S/2
S = 2B

The sum of the 3 of them
B + J + S = 180
B +B -20 + 2B = 180
4B = 200
B = 50

Let the score of Bill = B
the score of John = J
the score of Sue = S

B= J+20
B= S/2

B+J+S=180
=> B+ B-20 + 2B= 180
=> 4B = 200
=> B =50

consider john's points as x
so bill's points are x +20
So sue's points are 2x +40
total of all three students is 4x +60, but this total is given as 180
x = 30
so bill's points = 30 +20 = 50
correct answer option C

Seeing a question like this should always trigger your algebraic brain cells

J=B-20
B=J+20
B=0.5*S
S=2B

B+J+S=180

Now try using only ONE variable, in our case we will use B.

B+B-20+2B=180
Simplify to get all variables on one side and all numbers on the other side
4B=200
B=50
