This question can be solved by TESTing VALUES.
From the answer choices, we can see that 4 of the 5 answers have a common denominator of 12, so let's TEST that...
Total Savings = $12
Carol spends 1/4 of her savings on a stereo...
Stereo = (1/4)($12) = $3
...and 1/3 less than she spent on the stereo for a television.
Television = $3 - (1/3)($3) = $2
We're asked what fraction of her savings she spent on the stereo and television?
3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12
