Let the total amount be "x"
Amount spent on stereo=x/4
Amount spent on television=x/4-(x/4*1/3)=2x/12
Amount spent on stereo and television together=x/4+2x/12=5x/12=>5/12

Total Savings = S
Amount spent on stereo = (1/4)S
Amount spent on television = (1-1/3)(1/4)S = (2/3)*(1/4)*S = (1/6)S

(Stereo + TV)/Total Savings = S(1/4 + 1/6)/S = 5/12

Answer: C

Why is it (1-⅓)?

Many thanks.

Many thanks.

Because 1/3rd less than she spent on stereo= S/4-(1/3*S/4) [The amount she spent on the stereo 'minus' one-third of the amount she spent on stereo]

savvy??

Translate literally as possible.
Total (T)
Stereo (S)
Television (TV)

1/4T=S
2/3S=TV

2/3(1/4)T=TV

2/12T=TV
3/12T=S
S+TV=(3+2)/12= 5/12

C

Alternate solution

Total = $300
1/4 total = $75
1/3 stereo = $50

125/300 = 5/12

Bunuel

Assume saving = 100
Spent on stereo = 25 (1/4 of 100)
Spent on TV = 25-(1/3 of 25) = 50/3 (keep in fraction will be easy to proceed and also options are in fraction)
Fraction spent on (Stereo + TV )/ saving =(25+(50/3))/100=125/(3*100)=5/(3*4)=5/12
