At a certain zoo, the ratio of sea lions to penguins is 4 to 11. If there are 84 more penguins than sea lions at the zoo, how many sea lions are there?

S:P=4:11
or,11S=4P
given, S + 84 = P
or,4s + 336 = 4P
or,4S + 336 = 11S
or, 336 = 7S
or,S = 48

correct answer C

A. 24
B. 36
C. 48
D. 72
E. 132

Let’s let 4x = the number of sea lions and 11x = the number of penguins. We can create the equation:

4x + 84 = 11x

84 = 7x

12 = x

Thus, there are 4(12) = 48 sea lions in the zoo.
