Hello,

Can anyone please tell me where i am wrong below ? I Will really appreciate it.

vinnik
I am getting 1150. Please tell me where i am wrong here

.65 + .10/100 (n-250) = 1.55
.10/100 (n-250) = .90
.10n = 90 + 25
n = 1150

Not sure where i am wrong.

Try solving this problem by testing the answer choices.
Start with answer choice "c"
1040gm - 250 gm= 790 gm (round off to 800)
i.e. 65+80 cents= 1.45 cents
This is less than 1.55 cents hence we can eliminate c, d and e
Now test either A or B
B= 1145 gm
i.e. 1145-250= 895 gm , round off to 900 gm
65+90= 1.55
Hence correct ans is ans choice B
1150 is also a correct answer, but the question says that additional 10 cents is charged for every 100gm or parts thereof. Therefore i think the correct answer is testing the minimum quantity out of the two which will yield 1.55

In the same way solve for option "a"
1155gm
1155-250=905 gm (so in this case 100 cents will be charged)
so 100+65= 1.65 cents.
Thus leaving us with the correct answer "b"

Hope it helps

I am getting 1150. Please tell me where i am wrong here

.65 + .10/100 (n-250) = 1.55
.10/100 (n-250) = .90
.10n = 90 + 25
n = 1150

Not sure where i am wrong.

Your solution is right. Courier charges 65 cents for the first 250 grams and 90 cents for the next 900, but 1150 is not among answers. It is stated that the courier charges 10 cents for each additional 100 grams or part thereof.So, he charges 80 cents for 800 grams and 10 cents for 95 grams.

Hope it is clear.

Courier charges for packages to a certain destination are 65 cents for the first 250 grams and 10 cents for each additional 100 grams or part thereof. What could be the weight in grams of a package for which the charge is $1.55 ?

A. 1155
B. 1145
C. 1040
D. 950
E. 259

let the additional x*100 grams

65 +x*10 = 155
or x*10 = 90 or x = 9
therefore 800-900 gms is extra

total weight = 800-900+250 = 1040 - 1150 gms

option B

65 + 10x = 155
x = 9

So, 250 grams (for which 65 cents were charged) + 900 grams = 1150 grams.

Among the answer choices, 1145 qualifies.
