Let the Area of the complete Triangle = 1
Sum of the areas of the shaded regions = 1/6+1/4 = 5/12
Area of unshaded region = 1 - 5/12 = 7/12
Answer is C. 7/12

quantumliner's solution is perfect, so I won't provide a similar solution.
However, I'd like to point out a useful feature of diagrams on the GMAT: A diagram in a Problem Solving question can be assumed to be DRAWN TO SCALE unless it is specifically noted that the diagram is not drawn to scale.
So, since there is no such wording in this question, we can assume that it's drawn to scale.
So, if you have no idea how to solve the question (or others like it), you can always make an estimate.
In this case, the unshaded portion appears to occupy about half of the diagram. So, we can eliminate answer choices A, D and E, and make a 50-50 guess.
In fact, if we're good at estimating, we should see that the unshaded part takes up a little more than half of the diagram, in which case the answer must be C
