Five friends - Ross, Phoebe, Chandler, Joey, and Monica - decide to have lunch at a pizzeria. Five types of individual pizza are available: Hawaiian, Supreme, Veggie, Pepperoni, and Margherita. If Ross refuses to eat Hawaiian, Phoebe will only eat Margherita, and no two friends will eat the same type of pizza, in how many ways can they order lunch?

A. 18
B. 24
C. 48
D. 96
E. 120

Phoebe = 1 way
Ross = (remaining - Hawaiian) = (4-1)= 3 ways
Chandler = ( 5-2) = 3 ways
Joey = 2 ways
Monica = 1 way
1*3*3*2*1 = 18

Here, “if Ross refuses to eat Hawaiian” is giving a condition for the arrangements we are counting. In other words, treat it as “given that Ross refuses to eat Hawaiian.”

So we consider only cases in which Ross does not eat Hawaiian. We do not also count cases in which he accepts it.

Another point that might help is note the structure of the question stem:

If Ross refuses to eat Hawaiian, Phoebe ..., and no two friends ..., in how many ways can they order lunch?

This is like saying: Given Ross refuses to ..., Phoebe... and no two friends..., in how many ways can they order lunch?

So we need to find the number of ways in which they can order lunch given these 3 conditions.
