Joe can program 100 lines of code in 40 minutes, which is twice the speed at which Tom can program the same lines. How many lines of code could they program together if they worked continuously, each at their own constant rate, for 12 minutes?

A. 90
B. 75
C. 60
D. 45
E. 30

We are given that Joe can program 100 lines of code in 40 minutes, which is a rate of 100/40 = 2.5 lines per minute. Since his rate is twice that of Tom, Tom’s rate is 1.25 lines per minute.

Working together, their combined rate is 2.5 + 1.25 = 3.75 lines per minute.

Thus, in 12 minutes they could program 3.75 x 12 = 45 lines.

Answer: D
