I think the easier method to solve this problem is process elimination
Let's start with D
If the woman is 24, her daughter is 6 years old
In three years time, the woman will be 27. While, her daughter will be 9.

Therefore, the answer is D :-D

Checking the answer choices can be a very fast approach, especially if you start with the correct answer choice :-D
That said, I highly recommend that students check the answer choices if they can't find an alternative approach and/or checking the answer choices is clearly the fastest approach.

A woman is 4 times as old as her daughter. In 3 years she will be 3 times as old as her daughter. How old is the woman now?

A. 3 years
B. 6 years
C. 12 years
D. 24 years
E. 36 years


We can let the age of the woman today = w and the age of the daughter today = d. Since the woman is 4 times as old as her daughter:

w = 4d

In 3 years, the woman will be (w + 3) and her daughter will be (d + 3). At that time, she will be 3 times as old as her daughter:

w + 3 = 3(d + 3)

w + 3 = 3d + 9

w = 3d + 6

Since w = 4d, we can substitute 4d for w in the equation w = 3d + 6 and we have:

4d = 3d + 6

d = 6

Thus, the woman is now 4 x 6 = 24 years old.

Answer: D
