Let the distance between her home and her place of work be 120miles

Time spent travelling from home to work = 120/60 = 2hrs
Time spent travelling from work to home = 120/40 = 3 hours
Total time spent travelling = 5hours
Total distance covered = 240 miles
Average speed = 240/5 = 48mph.

A. 42.1 miles per hour
B. 44.4 miles per hour
C. 45 miles per hour
D. 48 miles per hour
E. 50 miles per hour

We can use the formula:

average = (total distance) / (total time)

If we let the distance each way = 120, then we have:

average = 240 / (120/60 + 120/40) = 240 / (2 + 3) = 240/5 = 48 mph

Answer: D

A. 42.1 miles per hour

Given: Charissa travels from home to work average speed of 60 miles per hour and from work to home at 40 miles per hour.

Asked: If Charissa travels by the same route in both directions, which of the following is Charissa's average speed during her daily commute?

From home to work:
Distance = x miles
Speed = 60 miles/hr
Time = x/60 hrs

From work to home:
Distance = x miles
Speed = 40 miles/hr
Time = x/40 hrs

Average speed = Total distance / total time = 2x / (x/60 + x/40) = 2x / (5x/120) = 2*120/5 = 48 miles /hr
