Is there a more efficient way to solve it than value substitution? If yes, could you please explain the same?

IMO, the best option is go from answer choices.
Let the price per pound of salad be x, size per salad be y
(x+0.2)(y-0.5) = 9 = xy
Since we have the price per pound, substitute the answer choices and see which of them makes sense.

In considering choice A, x=1.6
1.8(y-0.5) = 9
1.8y = 9.9
y = 5.5 Here, the value of xy is not 9 (1.6*5)

Consider choice B, x=1.7
1.9(y-0.5) = 9
1.9y = 9.95
y = 5.24
Here, the value of xy is not 9 (1.7*5.24)

Consider choice D, x=1.8
2(y-0.5) = 9
2y = 10
y = 5
Here, the value of xy is 9 (1.8*5)

==> If you set the price of the salad per pound as $p, for n pounds, you get np=(n-0.5)(p+0.2)=9. From np=np+0.2n-0.5p-0.1, if you substitute 0.2n=0.5p+0.1, and n=2.5p+0.5, you get p=1.8.
