If l1 || l2 in the figure to the right, what is the value of x?

(A) 30
(B) 45
(C) 60
(D) 72
(E) 90

We know that 5x + s = 360 degrees (angles around a point add to 360)

If l1 and l2 are parallel, then angle s = angle x

So, we can take 5x + s = 360 and replace s with x to get: 5x + x = 360
Simplify: 6x = 360
Solve: x = 60

Answer: C

5x + x = 360

So, 6x = 360

Or, x = 60

Thus, answer must be (C)

I thought 5x=x because they are alternate exterior angles. Aren't they??

5x refers to the circle with arrows at both ends. That circle indicates an angle that is NOT acute like x.

5x means "this much of the 360° around this point (that also contains angle S) has a measure of 5x."

s and x are corresponding angles. Not sure how you're getting 5x as an alternate exterior angle.
