An ice cream parlor only serves single scoops of chocolate or vanilla ice cream, in either a cone or a cup. On a certain day, the parlor served 80 scoops of ice cream, of which 25% were in cups. If the parlor served 16 chocolate cones and 12 vanilla cups, how many scoops of vanilla did the parlor serve?

A. 40
B. 44
C. 48
D. 52
E. 56

We can determine that 80 x 0.25 = 20 scoops were in cups and thus 60 were in cones.

Since 16 cones were chocolate, 60 - 16 = 44 cones were vanilla.

Since the parlor also served 12 vanilla cups, we see that the total number of vanilla scoops was 44 + 12 = 56 scoops.
