A marathon runner runs m miles in h hours. At this rate, how many miles will she run in 36 minutes ?
A. 3m/(5h)
B. 3m/h
C. 5m/(3h)
D. 36m/h
E. 36m/(5h)
Choosing values here is quick.
Assign values to \(m\) and \(h\). Calculate how many miles she would run at that rate in 36 minutes. Then see which answer matches yours.
For RTD questions with time conversion, and answer choices that are fractions, make life easy: choose a round number for the distance. If time starts in hours, choose 1 hour. And make the numbers fairly far apart. This way often eliminates 2-3 answers immediately.
Let m = 10, and h = 1
(She runs 10 miles in 1 hour)
At that rate, how many miles does she run in 36 minutes?
\(\frac{10mi}{1hr} * \frac{1hr}{60mins} * 36 mins\) = \(6\) miles
So m = 10 and h = 1, and we need the answer that = 6
Eliminate Answers B and D immediately. With h = 1 as a denominator, they are huge numbers compared to 6
Eliminate Answer E also. Though 5h = 5 is better than 1, 36m = 360. Don't do the arithmetic; it should be evident that \(\frac{360}{5}\) is greater than 6
Answers A and C remain. m = 10, h = 1. We want 6 as an answer
A. 3m/(5h)
\(\frac{(3*10)}{(5*1)} =\frac{30}{5} = 6\) MATCH
C. 5m/(3h)
\(\frac{(5*10)}{(3*1)} =\frac{50}{3} \neq{6}\) NO MATCH
Answer A
Skywalker18 , kudos for a good question and a non-default pronoun for your runner.
