[GMAT math practice question]

In the above table, scores and numbers of people are shown. If the median score is not represented as the score shown on the table, which of the following scores can be the value of x?

A. 2
B. 3
C. 4
D. 5
E. 6

Total number of people \(= 2+8+x+7+8=25+x\)

if \(x\) is even the then total number of people will be ODD, hence the median will be the mid value. As it is mentioned that the median is not represented in the chart and mid value will be a number from the chart, so it implies that \(x\) is not EVEN. So option A, C & E are out

so \(x\) is either \(3\) or \(5\). if \(x\) is \(3\), then the total number will be \(25+3=28\), hence the median will be mid value of 14th & 15th number. as 14th & 15th number in this case will be same \((a+1)\). Hence the median will be from the chart which is not possible.

So \(x=5\)

I think this question lacks the appropriate amount of background information sufficient of a GMAT question. Some more engineering could be required.

Hope you're well.

The table shows that the scores are incrementing by 1.
Let the scores be 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.

5,5,6,6,6,6,6,6,6,6,x times 7,8,8,8,8,8,8,8,9,9,9,9,9,9,9,9

Total number of terms on LHS of x is 10
Total number of terms on RHS of x is 15

Given condition is "the median score is not represented as the score shown on the table"

Option A) 2
If x=2

5,5,6,6,6,6,6,6,6,6,7,7,8,8,8,8,8,8,8,9,9,9,9,9,9,9,9

Median of the set above is be 8, and 8 is a score on the table.

Option D) 5
If x=5
5,5,6,6,6,6,6,6,6,6,7,7,7,7,7,8,8,8,8,8,8,8,9,9,9,9,9,9,9,9
The median in this case is (7+8)/2, and 7.5 is not represented as the score shown on the table.

You can check for other options B, C, and E.
