Eggs cost 90¢ a dozen. Peppers cost 20¢ each. An omelet consists of 3 eggs and 1/4 of a pepper. How much will the ingredients for 8 omelets cost?
(A) $.90
(B) $1.30
(C) $1.80
(D) $2.20
(E) $2.70
This question can be solved using a whole batch or per omelette approach. I did both, to check math.
BatchEach omelette requires 3 eggs and 1/4 of a pepper.
So 8 omelettes require:
8 * 3 eggs = 24 eggs
8 * \(\frac{1}{4} =\frac{8}{4}=2\) peppers
So: 24 eggs and 2 peppers
1 dozen = 12 eggs; 2 doz = 24 eggs
--Eggs cost 90 cents/dozen
90¢ * 2 dozen = 180 cents
--Peppers cost 20 cents/ea
20¢ * 2 = 40 cents
--(180 + 40) = 220 cents total
100 cents = 1 dollar
To convert from cents to dollars, move the decimal point two places to the left.
Or divide by 100
Or multiply by .01
Or, finally
220 cents * \(\frac{1dollar}{100cents}\) = 2.20 dollars: $2.20
Answer D
Per omeletteEach omelette requires 3 eggs and 1/4 of a pepper.
The cost per omelette:
There are 12 eggs in a dozen.
Each egg costs \(\frac{90¢}{12}\) = 7.5 cents.
We need 3 eggs.
Total cost, eggs:
(7.5¢)(3) = 22.5¢
Each \(\frac{1}{4}\) pepper costs \(\frac{20¢}{4}\) = 5 cents
We need 1/4 pepper
Total: 5 cents
One omelette costs (22.5 + 5) =
27.5 cents
Eight omelettes cost (27.5¢ * 8) = 220 cents = $2.20
