A bud vase that has a depth of 10 inches is filled with water to a depth of 8 inches. If a rose with a stem 12 inches long stands vertically in the vase, what fraction of the rose's stem is inside the vase, but not in the water?

(A) 1/6
(B) 1/5
(C) 1/4
(D) 1/3
(E) 1/2

What fraction of the rose's stem (stem = 12") is inside the vase (vase = 10") but not in the water (water = 8").
So the fraction is: \(\frac{(10-8)}{12}=\frac{1}{6}\)
(A) is the answer.

Fraction of the rose's stem inside the vase, but not in the water=
(Length of stem inside vase but outside water) / (Total Length of the stem)

= (10-2)/12 = 2/12= 1/6

Ans A
