The following tables show the revenues and costs, in thousands of dollars, for a small company in the year 2007.

Suppose in the following year, 2008, the sales are the same value, and half of those sales are directly due to the 2007 investment in R&D. The revenue received from these sales would be what percent greater than the money invested in R&D?

A. 85%
B. 110%
C. 200%
D. 402%
E. 503%

In 2008, we see that sales are 753, and that half those sales - 753/2 = 376.5 - are due to the 2007 investment in R&D. We can use the percent change formula:

(376.5 - 75)/75 x 100 = 301.5/75 x 100 ≈ 300/75 x 100 = 400 percent, which is closest to 402%.

Answer: D

Deconstructing the Question

Sales in 2007 = 753.
R&D investment in 2007 = 75.
In 2008, sales remain the same.
Half of the sales are due to the R&D investment.
We must find how much percent greater that revenue is than the R&D investment.

Step-by-step

Half of sales:

\(\frac{753}{2} = 376.5\)

Difference from investment:

\(376.5 - 75 = 301.5\)

Percent greater:

\(\frac{301.5}{75}\)

Since:

\(75 \times 4 = 300\)

\(\approx 4.02 = 402\%\)

Answer: 402%
