The value of a share of stock P and the value of a share of stock Q each increased by 16%. If the value of a share of stock P increased by 16 cents and the value of a share of stock Q increased by $1.68, what is the difference between the value of stock Q and the value of stock P before the increases?

(A) $8.00

(B) $9.50

(C) $10.00

(D) $10.50

(E) $11.02

This is a fantacstic question, because i cant believe i answred it correctly lol :)

both P and Q increased by 16%

p = 1.16 --> p increased by 16 cents hence initial value ---> x*0.16 = 0.16 P= 1
Q= 1.16 ---> q increased by 1.68 cents hence initial value ---> x.016 =1.68 Q = 10.5

10.5 - 1 = 9.5 :) YAY ! :-)

p.s. by the way when is it best time to buy stocks and which stocks ? :)

We let P = the value of stock P before the increase and Q = the value of stock Q before the increase. We can create the following equations:

1.16P = P + 0.16

0.16P = 0.16

P = 1

and

1.16Q = Q + 1.68

0.16Q = 1.68

10.5 = Q

The difference between the original prices is 10.5 - 1 = $9.50.

x*1.16=x+.16
x=1
y*1.16=y+1.68
y=10.5

y-x = 10.5-1 = 9.5
