Which of the following fractions is the LEAST?

(A) 7/8
(B) 7/12
(C) 8/9
(D) 1/2
(E) 6/17

We can solve this question without direct comparison, by estimating.
This is an Alternative approach.

A is about 1
B is about 1/2
C is about 1
D is exactly 1/2
E is about 1/3.

Then (E) is our answer.
Even had we not had one distinctive answer, then estimation would have helped narrow down our options.
Thanks your approach is really helpful

(C) 8/9
(D) 1/2
(E) 6/17

Whenever you have bigger numbers where an approximation doesn't work, this is another
approach to these type of questions - getting all the denominators to the same base.

Evaluating the answer options,

(A) \(\frac{7}{8} = \frac{7*9*17}{8*9*17}\) (63*17)
(B) \(\frac{7}{12} = \frac{7*6*17}{8*9*17}\) (42*17)
(C) \(\frac{8}{9} = \frac{8*8*17}{8*9*17}\) (64*17)
(D) \(\frac{1}{2} = \frac{4*9*17}{8*9*17}\) (36*17)
(E) \(\frac{6}{17} = \frac{6*8*9}{8*9*17}\) (48*9)

Therefore, Option E(\(\frac{6}{17}\)) has the least value.

(C) 8/9
(D) 1/2
(E) 6/17

Scanning the answer choices, we see that only 6/17 is less than 1/2 while the others are 1/2 or more, so the least fraction is 6/17.

Answer: E

Clear contenders are 1/2 vs 6/17

6 x 2 = 12 < 1 x 17 = 17 --> 12 < 17

Therefore, 6/17 < 1/2

6/17 is smallest.
