A salesperson earns 900 dollars per month plus a 10% commission on all sales over 1,000 dollars. One month she sells r dollars' worth of merchandise where r > $1000. How many dollars does she earn that month?

(A) 800 + 0.1r

(B) 800 - 0.1r

(C) 900 + r

(D) 900 - 0.1r

(E) 810 + 0.1r

soln::
900 dollars is the Fixed Amount which she will get every month

plus a 10% commission on sales over 1000
as she sell "r" dollars of merchandise
and "r">1000

therefore
her net commission would be
= 900 + 10%(1000-r)
=800+0.1r
ans

so Option A is the anser
Hello!
Could u write it more detailed, please?
Fixed salary = $900

Variable salary = 10 % of sales above $ 1000.

As in question , it is given r is greater than $ 1000.
She will get 10 percent of r- 1000 as variable salary or performance pay.
So her total salary = fixed salary + variable salary or performance pay.
= 900 + 10%(r-1000)
= 900 + 0.1r -100
= 800+ 0.1r.

(E) 810 + 0.1r

We can create the expression:

900 + 0.1(r - 1000) = 900 + 0.1r - 100 = 800 + 0.1r

Earning of salesperson=800+0.1(1000)=900

Earnings for the given month=800+0.1r ( as r is >$1000, commission would be 10% of $1000)

Salesperson earning has two components: Fixed ($900) and Variable ( 10 % commission only when sales are greater than 1,000 dollars).

She sells r dollars' worth of merchandise and r>$1,000: So she will get a commission for (r-1,000) [ Example: Suppose she sells 1,200 dollars' worth merchandise hence she will get a commission for 200 dollars sale (1,200-1,000=200)

She will earn as : Fixed component : $900 + Variable [10% of (r-1000)] -------> [10% is \(\frac{10}{100}\) = 0.1]

= 900 + 0.1 (r-1000)
= 900 + 0.1r - 100
= 800+0.1r
