A certain punch contains grape juice, orange juice, and pineapple juice and no other ingredients in a ratio of 2:3:7 respectively. If a bowl contains 156 ounces of this punch, how many ounces of grape juice does it contain?

1. 13
2. 26
3. 39
4. 91
5. 130
\(Gr : Or : Pn\)
\(2x: 3x: 7x\)
Sum of ratio parts = \(12x\)

Find the multiplier:
\(12x=156\)
\(x = 13\)

Grape = \(2x = (2*13) = 26\)

Hi All,

We're told that a certain punch contains grape juice, orange juice, and pineapple juice (and no other ingredients) in a ratio of 2:3:7 respectively and a bowl contains 156 total ounces of this punch. We're asked for the number of ounces of GRAPE juice in that bowl. Since this is a 'ratio' question, you can approach the math in a variety of different ways. Based on the 'spread' of the answer choices - and the fact that we're asked for just ONE of the ingredients (the total amount of GRAPE juice), we can solve this problem by TESTing THE ANSWERS.

Since the ratio of the 3 juices is 2:3:7 - and the grape juice is the SMALLEST amount of the 3 juices, we know that the answer will be a relatively small number. Let's TEST Answer B first...

Answer B: 26 ounces
IF.... there are 26 ounces of GRAPE juice...
then there are (3/2)(26) = 39 ounces of Orange juice and...
there are (7/2)(26) = 91 ounces of Pineapple juice

Total juice = 26 + 39 + 91 = 156 ounces

This is an exact match for what we were told, so this MUST be the answer!

Final Answer:

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

1. 13
2. 26
3. 39
4. 91
5. 130

We can create the equation:

2x + 3x + 7x = 156

12x = 156

x = 13

So, there are 13 * 2 = 26 ounces of grape juice.
