Solution

Given:
• Of the 180 appointed judges, 30% were women and 25% were from minority groups
• Of the women appointed, \(\frac{1}{9}\)th were from minority group

To find:
• The number of judges who were neither women nor from minority group

Approach and Working:
• Total women judges = 30% of 180 = 54
    o Judges who were not women = 180 – 30 = 150
• Judges from minority group = 25% of 180 = 45
    o Judges not from minority group = 180 – 45 = 135
• Women judges from minority group = \(\frac{1}{9}\) * 54 = 6
    o Women judges not from minority group = 54 – 6 = 48
Therefore, out of 135 judges who were not from minority group, 48 were women
• Hence, judges who were neither women nor from minority group = 135 – 48 = 87

Hence, the correct answer is option C.

Of the 180 judges appointed by a certain President, 30 percent were women and 25 percent were from minority groups. If 1/9 of the women appointed were from minority groups, how many of the judges appointed were neither women nor from minority groups?

A. 75

B. 81

C. 87

D. 93

E. 99

Total number of appointed judges = 180

30 percent of 180 appointed judges are women = 54
and 25 percent of appointed judges are from minority = 45

out of 54 women, 1 / 9 are from minority = 1/9 * 54 = 6

so the exact number of judges who are from minority and women = 54+45 - 6 = 93

so the number of judges who are neither women nor from minority = 180 - 93 = 87

C is the correct choice

We see that there are 180 x 0.3 = 54 women and 180 x 0.25 = 45 were from minority groups.

We also see that 54 x 1/9 = 6 women are from minority groups.

So we can create the equation:

Total = Women + Minority - Both + Neither

180 = 54 + 45 - 6 + Neither

87 = Neither
