Saplings are to be planted 30 feet apart along one side of a straight line 455 feet long. If the first sapling is to be planted at one end of the lane, how many saplings are needed?

Given:  
 • Saplings are to be planted 30 feet apart along one side of a straight line, which is 455 feet long
• First sapling is to be planted at one end of the lane

To find:  
 • The number of saplings required

Approach and Working:  
As the first sapling is to be planted at one end of the lane, we can write the patterns as following:
 • Sapling 1 at distance 0
• Sapling 2 at distance 30 * 1
• Sapling 3 at distance 30 * 2
• Sapling 4 at distance 30 * 3

Therefore, we can say  sapling n at distance 30 (n – 1)

Now, the nearest distance of 455 feet, which can be written as 30 * (n – 1) is 30 * 15
 • Hence, n – 1 = 15
Or, n = 16

Hence, the correct answer is option B.

Approach: since, 1st sapling was planted at the beginning of the road i.e. at 0 meter distance.
Now, total sapling that can be accommodated in 455 meters = 455/30 i.e. 15.16.
But we cannot have sapling in fraction. Therefore, a total of 15 + 1 (that is planted at 0 distance)
16 is answer.
