A large cube is composed of smaller cubes, each of which are 125 cubic centimeters in volume. If the larger cube has four of these smaller cubes as one of its lengths, what is the total volume of the larger cube, in cubic centimeters?

A) 125
B) 625
C) 2,000
D) 8,000
E) 15,625
Volume of smaller cube is 125, so its sides must be 5

Length of the large cube must be 20

Volume of the large cube must be 20^3 = 8000, Answer must be (D)

E) 15,625

If the larger cube has four smaller cubes as one of its lengths, then it has 4 x 4 x 4 = 64 smaller cubes. Since each smaller cube has a volume of 125 cubic centimeters, the volume of the larger cube is 64 x 125 = 8,000 cubic centimeters.

Alternate Solution:

Since each small cube has a volume of 125 cubic centimeters, the side of each small cube is 5 centimeters. The large cube has a length that is equal to 4 times the length of a small cube, so its length is 20 centimeters. Thus, the volume of the large cube is 20 x 20 x 20 = 8,000 cubic centimeters.
