5 minutes, which is equal to 30 tickets has to be subtracted.

At 9:00, 30 Tickets sold.
Each Hour Tickets Sold, (Ex-9:05 to 10:00) - 12 X 30 Tickets Sold
There are 8 Full Hours and 55 Minutes which means total tickets sold would be - 8X12X30+11X30+1X30 = 8X12X30+12X30 = 9X12X30= 3240 Tickets.

A zoo sold admission tickets to groups of 30 people every 5 minutes from 9:00 in the morning to 5:55 in the afternoon, inclusive. What is the total number of tickets sold?

A) 3120
B) 3150
C) 3180
D) 3210
E) 3240

30 * (9 * 60/5) -30
30 * 108 -30
30 *107
3210

Corrected !!

Since 9 am in inclusive , 30 tickets are sold at 9 as well !!

so total = 3210 + 30
3240

Hi,

Can you please help understand what is meant by at 9 AM? The question states every 30 tickets are sold every five minutes "from" 9 AM. So how can it be AT 9 AM?

Hi,

Can you please help understand what is meant by at 9 AM? The question states every 30 tickets are sold every five minutes "from" 9 AM. So how can it be AT 9 AM?

Hi,

The question says 9 am inclusive , we therefore have to take into account the number tickets sold at 9 am as well.

Assume the tickets started selling at 9:05
the next instance was at 9:10 followed by 9:15 .....10:00
total 12 such instances in an hour
now,
from 9 am to 6 pm we have 9 hours
total no of tickets sold = 12*9*30 =3240
but the last set of tickets were sold at 8:55
so the number of tickets sold till 8:55 is 3240-30 =3210 tickets.

coming back to the inclusive part of the question , 30 tickets were sold at 9 am
therefore
sum total = 3210+30=3240.

In each hour, for example, the 9am hour-period (i.e., 9:00 am to 9:59 am), the first time tickets were sold is at 9:00 am and the last time tickets were sold is at 9:55 am. Therefore, tickets were sold for (55 - 0)/5 + 1 = 12 times. Therefore, 12 x 30 = 360 tickets were sold during that hour. Similarly, 360 tickets were sold during the 1-hour period of 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm and 5pm. (Notice that we don’t exactly have a full hour during the 5pm hour-period; however, it doesn’t change the fact that 12 times the tickets were sold during the 5pm period since the first time tickets were sold during that period is at 5:00 pm and the last time is at 5:55pm.) Since we have 9 one-hour periods and during each one-hour period 360 tickets were sold, a total of 9 x 360 = 3240 tickets were sold.

There are 12 times when the clock reads 9:XX at which we will sell tickets.

The same is true of each of the other hours. 9, 10, 11, 12, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. That's 9.

12*9*30 = 3600-360 = 3240.

Answer choice E.
