m:f = 3:5 so, f:t = 5:8
now as t is 40, f must be 25.

here m is male, f is female and t is total students.

If the ratio of male students to female students in a philosophy class is 3:5, and there is a total of 40 students in the class, how many female students are in the class?

A. 8
B. 15
C. 16
D. 24
E. 25

We can create the equation:

3x + 5x = 40

8x = 40

x = 5

So, there are 5 * 5 = 25 female students.

A. 8
B. 15
C. 16
D. 24
E. 25

GIVEN: the ratio of male students to female students in a philosophy class is 3:5
3+5 = 8
So, for every 8 philosophy students, 3 are males and 5 are females.
In other words, 5/8 of the philosophy students are female.

So, if there are 40 students, the number of females = 5/8 of 40
= (5/8)(40)
= 25

Answer: E

Cheers,
Brent
