My question is why can't we set up a proportion for this problem and solve it? My equation is:
6 people---6 days
1 person---x=6/6=1 day ??

But the above strategy is obviously wrong!! Can someone please explain why?I am missing something here.

Q: If it takes 6 people 6 days to do a job? How many days would it take 2 people working at the same rate to do the job?

Red part is not correct:
6 people need 6 days to do the job;
6 people in one day do 1/6 of the job;
1 person in one day does 1/6*6=1/36 of the job.

2 persons in 1 day do 2*1/36=1/18 of the job.
To do the whole job the'll need 18 days.

But the above can be done in easier way.

It takes 6 people 6 days to do a job. How many days would it take 2 people working at the same rate to do the job?

A. 3
B. 6
C. 12
D. 16
E. 18

Time, rate and job in work problems are in the same relationship as time, speed (rate) and distance.

Time*Rate=Distance
Time*Rate=Job

We are told that combined rate decreased 3 times, therefore to do the same job, it would take 3 times more days (time). So, now it would take 6*3=18 days.

Answer: E.

so 2 people would take
36/2 = 18 days

Let's assign a "nice" value to the job (i.e., a value that works well with the given numbers: 6, 6, 2)
Let's say the job consists of making 36 widgets

It takes 6 people 6 days to do a job.
In other words, it takes 6 people 6 days to make 36 widgets.
This means 6 people can make 6 widgets in 1 day [If we divide the number of workdays by 6, the OUTPUT is divided by 6]
It also means 1 person can make 1 widget in 1 day [If we divide the number of workers by 6, the OUTPUT is divided by 6]

How many days would it take 2 people working at the same rate to do the job?
If 1 person can make 1 widget in 1 day, then...
... 2 people can make 2 widgets in 1 day [If we double the number of workers, the OUTPUT is also doubled]
The entire job is to make 36 widgets
At a rate of 2 widgets per day, it will take the workers 18 days to make 36 widgets

Answer: E

lets find rate:

6 Person * rate * time = work
6 * r * 6 = 1
36 * r = 1 --> r = 1/36

lets find time:

2 Person * rate * time = work
2 * 1/36 * t = 1
1/18 * t = 1 --> t = 18
