Average cost of 5 apples and 4 mangoes is Rs. 36. The average cost of 7 apples and 8 mangoes is Rs. 48. Find the total cost of 24 apples and 24 mangoes.

A. 1044
B. 2088
C. 3022
D. 4444
E. 4488

5a+4m=36; 36*9 = 324
7a+8m= 48 ; 48*15 = 720
so
12a+12m = 1024
or say
24a+24m = 2 *1024
2088

this way you get -24 for x, but will still get the right answer. this is a horrible question, like most gmat math questions.

The Author also wants that you solve the equation to waste precious time in exam.

Just Add the 2 equations and you will get the sum of cost of 12 mangoes and 12 apples.
Cost of 24 apples and 24 mangoes are double of that.
kumarankit01
one apple cost = x
one mango cost = y

from 1st.

5x+4y = 36*9
7x+8y = 48*15

by solving these we get the cost of each apple and mangos and we can calculate the teh required average .

Something doesn't add up here. If we multiply the first equation with 2 we get 10a+8m=648, however, 7a+8m=720. As 10a+8m must be larger than 7a+8m, these equations seem to be incorrect.
